On Wednesday the 4th of May Bournemouth University went head to head in 21 fixtures across 13 sports against local rivals Southampton Solent University.

It was the first ever official varsity event between the two universities which saw over 550 athletes compete across four different sites in Bournemouth.

SportBU walked away with the bragging rights winning two thirds of the fixtures played. Comfortable victories were assured for both male and female rugby teams whilst all three football teams succumbed to more experienced opposition.

SportBU's football teams struggled in front of large crowds at Chapel Gate.

SportBU’s football teams struggled in front of large crowds at Chapel Gate.

In arguably the closest contest of the day, the women’s hockey team clinched an emphatic 2-1 victory whilst their male counterparts took home a clinical 3-0 win.

Both male and female cricket teams found the going tough against high standard opponents with Solent fielding county players in both of its sides. Nevertheless, both teams showed promise with many squad players not in their final year of university life yet.

The Bournemouth University American football team otherwise known as the ‘Bobcats’ have had a progressive season as they continue to grow which was evident in a close encounter with local rivals the ‘Redhawks’. The game went Solent’s way however the Bobcats are also a youthful side with plenty of undisputed talent who will continue to expand.

Bobcats vs Redhawks: A fiercely fought encounter which went the way of the men in red.

To define the first official varsity day between Bournemouth University and Southampton Solent University as a success, one only has to look at the large crowds who made the awkward journey to Chapel Gate. Solent were also represented by a number of travelling supporters which produced an electric atmosphere and a day for the athletes to remember. BU students walked away as varsity champions 2016 however Solent will be back for more in 2017.
