What the managers had to say

Mark Hughes

“Everybody knew the significance of this result for us. You’ve just got to find a way and that’s what the guys did today.

“We picked ourselves up and I thought we were excellent in the second half and we weren’t to be denied.

“I think people have seen a change in the way we play and now we’ve taken that big step and got three points on the board. Hopefully this will loosen the shackles off and ease our anxiety.

“Now we’ve just got to try and maximise our opportunity. The challenge is to win every game we have left. It’s not going to be easy as we have our last home game against Manchester City but these next two games are clearly going to be crucial for us.”

Eddie Howe

“We were the masters of our own downfall.

“It was difficult to say what we deserved today and I’m disappointed. For a footballing side we gave the ball away so cheaply.

“We bombarded their goal late on and their keeper made a number of great saves but it wasn’t to be our day.”

77 Minutes – Nathan Ake plays a superb ball through to send in Jermain Defoe in on goal. Wesley Hoedt recovers well to make a slight challenge to take the ball away from the striker. The challenge looked clean in real time but replays have suggested that Hoedt made contact with Defoe and not the ball…

73 Minutes – Southampton should have put this game to bed by now. The opportunity presents itself to Mario Lemina to put the ball into the back of the net from a tight angle but he takes too long and Simon Francis steps in to swipe the ball out for a corner. The Cherries are still in this, somehow.

HALF TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 AFC BOURNEMOUTH

45 Minutes – GOAL – Bournemouth are level courtesy of a goal from Joshua King!

Out of nowhere the Cherries are level! The corner comes in and Steve Cook gets his head on it to flick it towards goal. With his header going wide King comes in out the back post to poke it home. The Cherries have gotten away with murder in this first half and will somehow go in at the break level!

30 Minutes – Southampton go close through Charlie Austin. The striker feints to cross and then almost catches out Begovic with a strike at the near post. Saints corner to follow.

25 Minutes – GOAL – Southampton take the lead through Dusan Tadic.

Terrible from the Cherries to get caught out so badly from their own corner. They left everyone up the pitch allowing Mario Lemina to claim possession and run through on goal with just Charlie Daniels left back to cover. Lemina plays in Tadic, who calmly slots home past Begovic.

24 Minutes – Good chance on the counter attack for the Cherries. Ryan Fraser’s square pass through the middle narrowly evades anyone in a Bournemouth shirt.

17 Minutes – The Cherries have failed to spark into life so far in this game, their passing in the final third has been found wanting.

We are underway at St. Mary’s – 11th place AFC Bournemouth face off against 19th place Southampton in this crucial end of season fixture!

10 Minutes Until Kick Off

St. Mary’s

AFC Bournemouth are seeking victory at St. Mary’s for the first time in the Premier League having fallen here two years ago and being held to a frustrating 0-0 draw last season.

Cherries Players To Watch

Ryan Fraser playing at right wing back is definitely worth keeping an eye on. The Scot put in notable performances playing in that position in the Carlao Cup against Brighton and Chelsea. Lys Mousset has been much improved in the second half of this season, weighing in with two crucial goals in the league.

Southampton slip to 19th place pre-kick off

Following Stoke City’s hard fought 0-0 draw at Anfield this lunchtime against Liverpool the Potter’s have leapfrogged Saints. However, Mark Hughes’ side currently have two games in hand.
