DRINKING IS LIKELY TO BE A BIG PART OF YOUR FRESHERS WEEK, OR UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE IN GENERAL. WHY NOT BOND WITH YOUR FLATMATES BY CREATING SOME DELICIOUS COCKTAILS TO GET YOUR YEAR STARTED. AFTER ALL, FRIENDS WHO DRINK TOGETHER…
Forget your standard concoctions this freshers fortnight and make up some cocktails with your new flatmates and friends. It’s a great way to bond in the kitchen while you all hang out and play some games. Hopefully you’ll discover your new drink and you’ll think back with fond memories of when you made cocktails from that Nerve article and bonded with your uni bestie.
THE EASIEST MONDAY MOJITO
Monday in Bournemouth offers a night out in Halo, a club inside of a church. Yeah. If you’re into your Alt & Indie music, DISTRICT will be in Walkabout this year, boasting cheaper drinks. Propaganda will be replacing DISTRICT at The Old Fire Station this year. This is a new club night for Bournemouth that promises Indie, Pop and Punk Rock. So start your week off with the easiest and quickest Mojito around:
- White Rum
- Mojito flavoured 7-UP
A TOASTED TUESDAY
Tuesday nights see Yate’s turn into one of Bournemouth’s most popular nights, with queues going all the way down the road and the smell of toast drifting in every direction. Toast Tuesday’s is full of the latest hits and you’re likely to leave with a piece of toast in hand. Or hanging out of your mouth.
- Orange juice
- Pineapple juice
CAMEO ICED TEA
Cameo Wednesdays is perhaps the biggest night of the week. You’ll probably spend half of the night outside and the rest in VINYL dancing to the cheesiest hits you can imagine, complete with light up dance floor. If you’re clever, or you’ve read this article, you’ll know that CAMEO offers a Long Island Iced Tea (that’s 5 shots of alcohol) for £3 on a Wednesday. A very freshers-friendly drink.
- Southern Comfort
- Cranberry Juice (to top up)
- Lemonade (to top up, again)
*you could share out the spirits with your friends to break up the cost, but it’s likely that you’ll all have a bottle of some kind of spirit that you can mix together.
Applebum visits Bournemouth a couple of Thursdays a term and it is not a night to be missed. This hip hop and RnB night is huge across the UK and the freshers jump off will surely be a huge night that you will regret if you miss out on.
- Apple schnapps
- Apple juice
- Lemon & Apple
Lollipop is the student union night at The Old Fire Station, with three rooms of music and you can stumble home to most of the halls in a matter of minutes. It will take you 3 years to work out the best time to get to the queue for Lollipop, but every week you’ll stand waiting to get in, and you will do it every single week because it’s just great.
- Plastic shot glasses
- Jelly (2 or more colours)
- Peach Schnapps
- Gummy Bears, other sweets
Make the two mixtures with different colour jelly, one with vodka in, one with peach schnapps. You need to let one set before you pour in the other. Place a gummy bear or other sweets in the jelly so you’ll have a bit of extra flare. Layer the two jelly mixtures as many times as you like and create some delicious shots. You can mix in any spirits into any colour jelly and make jelly shots all day, erryday.
Bournemouth’s beach is sandy, spectacular and very underused by the student population. While the beach is a 10 minute walk from most halls and you’re ‘just, like, so excited to live near the beach’, you’ll regret not going enough.
- Mango & Passion Rubicon
- Pineapple Juice
Snakebite Sunday at Walkabout can be lethal. They’re only £2 and they’re kind of delicious… Add blackcurrant and make them delicious or knock yourself out with this twist…
- 1/2 cider
- 1/2 the cheapest beer you can find
- Blackcurrant cordial
- Shot of vodka
Do it like a Jagerbomb and thank me later.
I hope Freshers’ week is something you’ll want to relive again and something you’ll be talking about next year with those you made friends with while making really strong cocktails in your flat. Just drink responsibly and have the best time blowing half your loan in 2 weeks.
