AVAILABLE ROLES

Head of News (and Deputy)

Head of Nerve News is responsible for making sure that Nerve delivers all the exciting news to Bournemouth University students across radio, online and TV. It is key that you will have an eye for what is newsworthy on a local, national and international level and a commitment to being the first to report accurately and fairly.

You’ll be required to lead and motivate your team, hosting regular meetings to work democratically but also acting as the main decision-maker. You will know and play on your team members’ strengths as well as inspire them to pursue original stories and creatively deliver them. A strong relationship is vital to maintain with other Nerve committee members, the university and SUBU.

Overseeing articles and news bulletins to uphold Nerve News’ Code of Ethics is extremely important to maintain credibility. Basic tech knowledge is also required regarding the ability to produce news content for radio and maximise SEO for online articles. You need to be creative and understand the importance of converging on all platforms including social media.

Key Responsibilities

  • Know what is newsworthy and always look out for the best opportunities to report in the most creative ways – including social media
  • Organise reporting of events on-and-off campus that are relevant to our audience
  • Manage and motivate the news committee and reporters by hosting regular meetings
  • Work closely with the Heads of the other departments to uphold Nerve Media’s reputation for excellent convergence
  • Organise news shows and work to develop them with News Editors
  • Understanding of radio software and hardware i.e. Tascams, Adobe Audition, Scoop, Myriad, etc
  • Ensure all news stories follow the Code of Ethics and Ofcom

Radio News Editors x 3

Radio News Editors are responsible for staying up to date with all the latest news from a local to international scale, whether that’s politics, entertainment or sport.

You’ll be required to have a keen eye for the most interesting and relevant stories to report on our daily news bulletins, which will be produced by the Radio News Editors. This includes arranging interviews and helping other news reporters produce radio news packages.

Collaboration is essential as you will be working closely with the News team and the Nerve committee. You may be expected to participate and bring content to the Nerve News Hour – which you present alongside other Editors – where you will discuss in detail the most interesting and relevant news from the past week on air. You will also be expected to work alongside other departments including Online, Magazine and TV to create content across all of Nerve’s platforms.

Enthusiasm, dedication and organisation are key attributes to succeed in the role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Keep up to date with the latest news from news, entertainment and sport
  • Commitment to ensure Nerve News reports to the highest standards.
  • Report on events in the community
  • Produce a rota schedule for radio news bulletins
  • Produce and edit bulletins to their highest standards and fill in for absent newsreaders
  • Participate in the Nerve News Hour
  • Collaborate with other departments of Nerve
  • Post on social media platforms e.g. Twitter, Facebook and Instagram
  • Network with key people in the local community for stories

Online News Editor (and sub)

The Head of Online News is responsible for running the news section of Nerve Now (website). As the editor it will be the candidate’s responsibility to recruit and manage a team of writers, making sure that news articles are being published frequently on the website, with each writer contributing an article at least once a fortnight.

The ideal candidate should have a great working knowledge of WordPress, including how to edit and format articles so that they are fit for publishing online i.e. SEO, crediting, spelling, grammar, etc. You need to have extensive knowledge of IPSOs Editors’ Code of Practice and how to implement it.

The Head of News Online will also be required to promote articles and other content on social media – Facebook, Twitter and Instagram – when they have been published.

The ideal candidate should have previous experience of writing for online news publications. They ideally should have several articles published on Nerve Now with knowledge of the house style and brand.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and motivate a team of news writers – create rota and provide guidance as editor
  • Make sure your team is up to date by posting about relevant news
  • Ensure articles are of a high standard and appropriate for Nerve Now
  • Work with fellow Nerve Now committee effectively to grow online platform
  • Collaborate with other departments to further develop brand
  • Keep an eye on what’s trending online and on social media
  • Promote content via social media

TV News Editor

We are looking for someone creative and enthusiastic to oversee the news content produced for the Nerve TV station and its social media. You will need to have a sound understanding of media law, good organisation skills and a keen interest in local, national and international current affairs.

You will manage a team of news Content Producers who will be available for you to delegate stories to, as and when they arise. These stories will be made into <1’ videos for social media. You will also have a responsibility to create content yourself, therefore experience of operating camera equipment and using Adobe Premiere Pro is desired (but not essential). For this position, we are also looking for someone with an understanding of Facebook post engagement, as producing videos for social media is essential.

You will need to attend News committee meetings to maintain a decent standard of story convergence across the news department.

The TV News Editor will be involved in regular meetings with the Committee to update the team on any progress being made within the department, as well as feeding into ideas on how Nerve TV can further improve. As a committee role, this person will be involved in making any decisions which affect Nerve TV as an activity.

Training will be provided for this role.

Deputy TV News Editor

In addition to supporting the TV News Editor with the day to day logistics of the department, you will help to manage a team of news Content Producers who will be available for you to delegate stories to, as and when they arise. These stories will be made into <1’ videos for social media. You will also have a responsibility to create content yourself, therefore experience of operating camera equipment and using Adobe Premiere Pro is desired (but not essential). For this position, we are also looking for someone with an understanding of Facebook post engagement, as producing videos for social media is essential.

You will need to attend News committee meetings to maintain a decent standard of story convergence across the news department.
