2019 may have been a good, bad or a mixed bag kind of year for some – but you can’t deny that for these 5 key breakout musical artists, 2019 was extraordinary for their work.

Lizzo

Lizzo’s music repertoire does not lack empowering messages of growth, self-confidence, self-acceptance and good relationship advice.

Alongside this, her breakthrough could be credited to social media as the star’s ‘’Truth Hurts’’ became a certified internet sensation on the video sharing platform TikTok.
With the help of this, after being around for several years, in 2019 Lizzo finally received the recognition she deserves – breaking records as the first black solo R&B artist to stay on the top of the Billboard’s Hot 100 chart, since Rihanna in 2012.

Lizzo’s drive, messages of body positivity, emphasis on good self-esteem, as well as her ability to produce absolute bops in 2019 puts her in a slot on this list.

Lewis Capaldi
In the age of social media, having a larger than life personality often makes certain artists stand out – this being the case for Lewis Capaldi. Lewis came into 2019 with the hit that was “Someone You Loved”- the single becoming Grammy nominated, while also being number 1 for 7 weeks on the UK Singles Chart.
The artist has amassed over 4 million followers on Instagram with humorous and relatable content about his life. One viral clip featured Capaldi hilariously denouncing his reported net worth of 10 million dollars, him stating that this is ‘’nonsense’’ and that he is still living with his parents, in his old childhood bedroom.
Despite his humble lifestyle, Lewis has become the first ever artist in history to have sold out a world tour without the release of a debut album – his 2020 World Tour that commences in March was sold out in less than 2 seconds.

2020 indeed seems like a promising year for Lewis Capaldi.

BTS
K – Pop (Korean Pop) has had a steady rise of popularity in the West over the previous decade, and BTS can be partially credited for this. This Korean boy group have had a whirlwind of a year in the West, having already gathered a large following back in Korea and most certainly in the social media and global world.
Although 2011 was the year when BTS started to get more recognition over on this side of the world, 2019 was still full of achievements. BTS became the first Asian artists to be streamed more than 5 billion times on Spotify whilst also appearing and presenting at the 2019 Grammy Awards. With this, their 2019 album ”Map of the Soul: Persona” managed to reach number 1 on the UK’s Official Album Chart, being the first Korean act ever to take the spot.

With a dedicated fan base and a long list of musical accolades behind them, BTS have certainly built upon their already massive success in 2019.

Billie Eilish
Like Lizzo, Billie has been making and producing music since before 2019 – her first EP ‘Don’t Smile at Me’ having been released in 2017 to moderate success when compared to the attention she received 2 years later, after releasing ‘When We Go To Sleep, Where Do We Go?’.
2019 was Billie’s year for sure. ”When We Go To Sleep, Where Do We Go?” made her the youngest female artist ever to have a number 1 album on the UK Albums Chart. With the single ‘Bad Guy’, the fifth single to be released from the album, Billie also became the youngest person ever to have a number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Last year was without a doubt the year for Billie and many of the fans and the industry are waiting to see what she has in store for 2020.

Lil Nas X
Country / R & B artist Lil Nas X strikes as a deserving overnight sensation, when compared to other artists on this list.
The genre bending country rap song ‘Old Town Road’ seemed to be everywhere the past year. The song made the unique transition from  being incredibly popular on  TikTok, to being the longest charting number 1 single on Billboard Hot 100, since the creation of the chart. The song then got a reworking of sorts, thanks to the  collaboration between Lil Nas X and country legend Billy Ray Cyrus, which was also incredibly popular.
Whilst his sexuality isn’t the most important thing about Lil Nas X, the artist has revealed he was gay in 2019 and he was the first artist ever to reveal this whilst also simultaneously having a number one single in the charts.
With his second single ‘Panini’ coming out later in 2019,  the country rapper has accumulated over 2.3 billion streams on online musical streaming platforms – all of this having been achieved in just a year.

It can be argued that Lil Nas X  has achieved by far the biggest break out in 2019 –  in terms of growth, someone who seemingly came out of nowhere. But hopefully Lil Nas X is here to stay!
