Review: Ellie Goulding’s Army

Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding released her brand new single Army today, and we were lucky enough to get sent the track ahead of its release.

Army, taken from Ellie Goulding’s latest album Delirium, hits the shelves today, and it is quite possibly one of Ellie’s best tracks yet. Fans of Ellie will know that this is not the first time this tune has been heard, as she sang this song to the star studded audience at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show last year to rave reviews.

The new single – written by Goulding herself with the help of legendary hot maker Max Martin – is about her best friend, which makes a nice change from all the love songs and breakup songs that are filling up the charts in recent times. The song itself is a classic pop ballad written in B Major. The new tune starts off with a light guitar riff and then rises to a great ballad, similar to many of her previous tracks; followed by the lyrics “when I’m with you, I’m standing with an army”.

Ellie accompanied her new track with a new music video released on the 14th of January, filmed in black and white featuring Goulding’s best friend Hannah. The music video depicts Hannah and Ellie playing around, and Ellie singing to a live audience, giving off a very home-video feeling to it.

All in all, the song itself was very good, though I’d have to say that in my opinion, not as great as Love Me Like You Do. Unfortunately, a hit as big as that one was bound to bring comparisons! Army, however, still holds its own with a powerful chorus and sweet lyrics, and it is definitely a different change of pace from the romance ballads that Goulding has previously released.
