Joshua Coase’s Tracks Of The Week

Scene Writers vs Cookin On 3 Burners – Real Life Baby

Scene Writers - Real Life Baby

Scene Writers are a Berlin based electro-pop duo, consisting of singer Christian Huerter and drummer Sebastian Nouvortne.

They combine modern electronic elements, uplifting guitars and classic piano in their tracks usually to create a contemporary sound.

However, this track, Real Life Baby, is bit more of an electronic synth dance track featuring Cookin On 3 Burners.

It is certainly an up-tempo track perfect to add to your own playlists, whether that be for running or for pre drinks!

Lauv – Getting Over You

Lauv - Getting Over You

Getting Over You is the latest release by Ari Staprans Leff, better known as Lauv.

The singer-songwriter has previously featured on this show with the track Easy Love and I Like Me Better was one of my favourite pop records of last year.

This is the fifth single to be released by the American and I am highly anticipating his debut album but he is yet to give away too much information about his LP.

I can confirm that he is working on the record and Lauv chose to release this single on Valentines Day, clearly he couldn’t resist releasing a break up song on this day!

That being said, it is still a great track to listen to and unwind despite it not being as ‘poppy’ as his previous releases.

Vera – Diamonds

Vera - Diamonds

Vera is an up and coming producer from Copenhagen, Denmark and featured a few times on this show last year.

His debut EP, Good Job No Conversation, was my Album/EP of the week on December 12th.

I recommend you check out Mystery, In and Out of Love and his cover of James Blake’s track Life Round Here.

I love the use of the saxophone in his tracks and Vera has described Diamonds as being his most pop track to date and probably his favourite track that he’s released so far.

George The Poet & Maverick Sabre – Follow The Leader Feat. Jorja Smith

George The Poet - Follow The Leader

Maverick Sabre took the lead on this collaboration and wrote Follow The Leader around three years ago.

Speaking about this record, he said that having previously worked with George in South Africa and with Jorja Smith on a couple of records, (check out their duet Carry Me Home, it is stunning) this was the first time that they were together in the same room and that led to the creation of this record.

George Mpanga, better known as George The Poet is a British spoken-word artists with an interest in social and political issues.

This song carries a powerful message, opening with George’s rap before bursting into life with the highly distinctive vocals of Maverick and Jorja, making for a very catchy hook which will stick in your head.

In the words of Jorja, Follow The Leader is as song “about how problems can persist and keep going around in circles because people are sometimes too scared to stand up and do their own thing.”

Joshua Coase’s Album Of The Week

Rejjie Snow – Dear Annie

Rejjie Snow - Dear Annie

Alexander Anyaegbunam, AKA Rejjie Snow is a 24-year-old Irish hip hop artist from Dublin.

Rejjie abandoned a football scholarship in the US in 2012 to pursue a music career and it has certainly paid off with this excellent debut album.

Dear Annie features 20 tracks and is a fun record which takes you on a real journey of his life and his ups and downs over the course of 60 minutes.

I particularly like the intermissions where Rejjie is being interviewed by the nameless interviewer whose voice is disguised by the use of a vocoder.

These breaks allow us to hear from Rejjie and find out more behind the inspiration for his songs.

The opening track Hello is a sweet, saxophone inspired instrumental to really get you in the mood to join Rejjie on his musical journey, with the rest of the tracks keeping you engaged with plenty of light and shade.

Spaceships is a track which I recommend you hear and listen out for the Stevie Wonder-esque outro with a funky harmonica. This track also features Ebenezer singing the chorus, who also released his own EP this week titled Bad Romantic.

But personally may favourite track is Charlie Brown, a really catchy song with humorous lyrics and attention grabbing instrumentation.

Other Albums To Check Out This Week

Euan Thomas’ Tracks Of The Week

Track Reviews by Euan Thomas

Khalid & Normani – Love Lies

Khalid & Normani - Love Lies

This is a track from one of my favourite artists at the moment, Khalid.

The hugely talented 20 year old singer song writer from Fort Stuart USA burst onto the scene in 2017 with his stunning debut album American Teen.

This is second release of 2018 following his feature on the Black Panther Soundtrack alongside Swae Lee.

Khalid’s incredibly distinctive voice is unmistakeable from the outset and Normani’s light vocal complements it well into the second verse and during the bridge.

Another great tune from an artist who’s profile continues to soar of late.

Mauwe – Gold

Mauwe - Gold

This track captivated me from the outset with clever synth and electronic elements making for an easy listening number that instantly lifts your mood.

The vocals have a somewhat edgy quality to them and the combination of both male and female voices creates intrigue throughout.

I expect we will be seeing a lot more of this Bristol based duo in 2018.

Youngr – Remember

Youngr - Remember

Youngr is an extremely talented multi-instrumentalist from Manchester who has gone from strength to strength in recent times.

His unique performance style was on show during the SUBU Summer Ball in 2017 where he dazzled audiences with his live set, showcasing his skills on several instruments. If you get the chance to see this guy live do it!

Remember is Youngr’s first single following his debut album This is not an Album in January 2018.

It blends pop and electronic elements for a great feel good track that gets your feet tapping.

I hope more people can see the skills this guy has in the coming months and that we will be seeing a lot more of him in 2018.

Afrojack – Bed Of Roses Feat. Stanaj

Afrojack - Bed Of Roses

Dutch DJ Afrojack is an artist I have enjoyed for many years now and his latest track does not disappoint.

The easy listening style and somewhat understated drop makes for a track that wouldn’t seem out of place in a travel video and gives off a summer vibe, perfect for getting you in the mood for the warmer weather. Another great tune from Afrojack.
