While Bournemouth University hosts a variety of student writing publications – like Nerve, The Bournemouth Rock, The Student Eye – it is clear at a glance that television is a medium that is rarely explored on campus.
However, on Wednesday 29th October, BU’s award-winning independent television station, JUMP TV, launched for the new academic year with a brilliant event at the Orange Rooms, showcasing some of the work that can be expected. Run by a group of Television Production and Multimedia Journalism students, the television station is split into four areas (entertainment, sport, music, culture/news) covering a diverse range of topics both locally and nationally in monthly packages starting from mid-November. In talking to some of the students leading the sections, the enthusiasm and love for what they do is palpable. These students come from a variety of schools on campus, not just the Media School. The diversity and community feeling of this project is something rather special and brilliant – this is something where the words ‘anyone can join in’ rings true.
Founded originally in 2012 by former Multimedia Journalism student, Jasper Taylor, JUMP TV is moving forward into a new generation with second year Television Production students, Natalie McKay and Matt Winlow taking the lead this year. The excellent work previewed so far puts them in good stead for them to attend the National Student Television Association (NASTA) awards in 2015.
JUMP TV is becoming increasingly well-known within the university after the successful relaunch. It is good to see a new project with such an enthusiastic team. Deputy Station Manager, Matt Winlow, agreed with this: “Both Natalie and I are really excited, especially with the number of people who have wanted to create content. People have already been out filming, for example the Coffee House Sessions in the Loft and local news stories that we hope students at BU will find really interesting! It’s definitely going to be a good year!”
As part of the relaunch, JUMP TV are also running a competition, ‘JUMP IN’, challenging Bournemouth University students to create a 10-20 second title graphics sequence for JUMP TV to use at the front of every episode. Students are allowed to display their creativity however they want, it merely has to feature the JUMP TV logo, and must be sent in before 30th November.
With all the projects, competitions and content being produced by JUMP TV, they are certainly one to watch in the coming months.
