5forFreshers: Silva Chege

Damn Nerve, back at it again with the Fresher’s advice! (As you can tell, we’re trying to see how long we can get away with being stupidly cheesy). We are indeed back with the latest instalment of our 5forFreshers series but before we go on, let’s take a look at what we’ve learnt so far. Well, we’ve learnt that freebies are good, bravery is key, Coke is better than Pepsi (supposedly) and what makes THE ULTIMATE MEAL DEAL. Stellar advice in our opinion.

Today we are joined by Silva Chege who lets us know his 5 top tips including why Rihanna’s summer anthem, ‘Work’ should be your mantra during your first year at university.

Got any embarrassing, funny or downright lame stories from your time as a Fresher? Maybe you’ve got the key to all Fresher wisdom or you have that one picture from Fresher’s that you just HAVE to show the world. Send us your tweets to @NerveOnline with the hashtag #5forFreshers and you may be featured in in the next article! It really doesn’t get any better than this, aye?

1. ‘ET phone home’

Yes, you’re having the best time of your life. Yes, Cameo Wednesday is absolutely legendary. But amongst all the fun and games, don’t forget to spare a thought for your mother. Remember her? Your mother… The one who raised you from a crying baby to a university student and hopefully a future functioning part of society? Yeah, her. Well, she misses you more than you can even begin to imagine. In acknowledgment of all her years of love and good dinners, don’t forget to call home once in a while and show her you care. In the immortal words of ET ‘Phone home’.

2 .Work, work, work

(First of all, that was my tune all summer!)

Particularly if you want to pursue a career in the creative industry, employers aren’t just looking for graduates with good grades (although it does help!), they also want to see people with fat portfolios filled with their own personal work. University, in particular BU and AUB is absolutely packed with artistic genius, so take advantage of the bags of talent on offer and network the hell out of the place. Get creating! Real talk.

3. Call me maybe

University is the best place in the world if you’re single. Period. Where else can you be surrounded by beautiful women and good looking guys in such abundance, all day every day? Nowhere. May it be joining societies, Tinder or asking your fit housemate to hook you up with their equally fit friends, either way don’t be scared to step out of your comfort zone and meet people. Put yourself out there and good things will come.

4. Catch some zzzs

Exam day is looming close. You really want to pass your first year of university, so you begin to panic. You give in to the temptation of spending night after night studying, because you think that’s the only way you’re going to pass. Wrong. Our brains can only retain a certain amount of information in one sitting and that capacity is dramatically reduced when we’re sleep deprived. Do yourself a favour and get some sleep! No one wants to be that person with a bed time at university, but everyone needs their beauty (and brain) sleep. Well, except if you’re Bella Hadid, because she’s always beautiful…

5. Break the fourth wall

Computers are a great invention. Netflix is a great invention. But do you know what isn’t an invention? Real life. Leave your computer behind and venture out into the great outdoors. There is so much beauty beyond the four walls of your room just waiting to be explored and just encase no one told you Bournemouth actually has a beach. I know, unbelievable right? Go see it, while you have the chance. Summer is nearly over and winter is creeping around the corner so make every minute count.
